Softly and Tenderly: A Hymn of Gentle Invitation

In 1880, a hymn was born that would become a beloved invitation to the heart of God. “Softly and Tenderly Jesus Is Calling,” penned by Will Lamartine Thompson, first appeared in his collection “Sparkling Gems, Nos. 1 and 2 Combined,” published by his own W. L. Thompson & Company in East Liverpool, Ohio.

For Will, music was not just a passion but a calling. He once said, “No matter where I am, at home or hotel, at the store or traveling, if an idea or theme comes to me that I deem worthy of a song, I jot it down in verse. In this way I never lose it.” This dedication to capturing divine inspiration is evident in the gentle, yearning lyrics of “Softly and Tenderly.”

A Song That Touched the Heart of a Nation

The hymn quickly gained popularity, particularly through its use in the revival meetings of the renowned evangelist Dwight L. Moody. The simple, heartfelt invitation to come to Jesus resonated with countless souls, drawing them to the feet of the Savior.

But perhaps the most powerful testament to the impact of “Softly and Tenderly” came from Moody himself. As he lay on his deathbed in 1899, Moody was visited by Will Thompson. Despite his weakness, Moody expressed his profound admiration for the hymn, saying, “Will, I would rather have written ‘Softly and Tenderly Jesus Is Calling’ than anything I have been able to do in my whole life.”

These words speak volumes about the eternal significance of a simple song of invitation. In a world that often values grand gestures and impressive feats, Moody recognized that there is no higher calling than to point souls to the loving arms of Jesus.

A Legacy That Endures

Today, over a century after its composition, “Softly and Tenderly” continues to be a staple of Christian worship. Its message of gentle invitation, of a Savior who is waiting and watching for the lost to come home, is as relevant now as it was in Will Thompson’s day.

As we sing this beloved hymn, may we be reminded of the power of a life dedicated to sharing the love of Christ. May we, like Will Thompson, use the gifts God has given us to draw others to the feet of Jesus, trusting that the impact of our faithfulness will resound through eternity.
