verse 1
Day by day and with each passing moment
Strength I find to meet my trials here
Trusting in my Father’s wise bestowment
I’ve no cause for worry or for fear
He whose heart is kind beyond all measure
Gives unto each day what He deems best
Lovingly its part of pain and pleasure
Mingling toil with peace and rest
verse 2
Every day the Lord Himself is near me
With a special mercy for each hour
All my cares He fain would bear and cheer me
He whose name is Counselor and Power
The protection of His child and treasure
Is a charge that on Himself He laid
As your days your strength shall be in measure
This the pledge to me He made
verse 3
Help me then in every tribulation
So to trust Your promises O Lord
That I lose not faith’s sweet consolation
Offered me within Your holy Word
Help me Lord when toil and trouble meeting
E'er to take as from a father’s hand
One by one the days the moments fleeting
Till I reach the promised land
Day by day and with each passing moment
Strength I find to meet my trials here
Trusting in my Father’s wise bestowment
I’ve no cause for worry or for fear
He whose heart is kind beyond all measure
Gives unto each day what He deems best
Lovingly its part of pain and pleasure
Mingling toil with peace and rest

Every day the Lord Himself is near me
With a special mercy for each hour
All my cares He fain would bear and cheer me
He whose name is Counselor and Power
The protection of His child and treasure
Is a charge that on Himself He laid
As your days your strength shall be in measure
This the pledge to me He made

Help me then in every tribulation
So to trust Your promises O Lord
That I lose not faith’s sweet consolation
Offered me within Your holy Word
Help me Lord when toil and trouble meeting
E'er to take as from a father’s hand
One by one the days the moments fleeting
Till I reach the promised land

Call to Worship

Brief but meaningful reflections to help your congregation engage with the story, emotions, and spiritual truths behind beloved hymns before lifting their voices in worship together. Feel free to read as is or put into your own words!

As we gather in worship, I want to share the story of Lina Sandell, a remarkable woman whose life and lyrics have touched countless hearts. Born in Sweden in 1832, Lina faced numerous trials, from childhood illness to the devastating loss of her father.

But in her darkest moments, Lina discovered an unshakable source of strength and comfort: her unwavering faith in the Lord. As she poured out her heart in prayer, hymns like “Day by Day” began to flow from her pen, giving voice to her pain, hope, and trust in her Heavenly Father.

As we sing this hymn together, may we be inspired by Lina’s example of faith in the face of adversity. May we trust, as she did, that our loving Father is always near, bearing our burdens and mingling our toil with His peace and rest.
